Keeping My Eye on the Prize

At the beginning of the new year, it is common to reevaluate life and set some goals for the next twelve months, both personal and professional. Some write goals down, but most people at least think about what they’d like to accomplish in the shiny newness of 2014.

I have my professional goals. I published three books last year. This year, I’m aiming for four. With every book I try to attract new readers and entertain the ones who’ve been with me all along. That goal remains the same. I’ve just finished reading several posts about 2014 predictions in the publishing industry and the only thing I got from the four I read is that no one knows what’s going to happen in the coming year. This helps me keep my hands on the keyboard and my focus on my own goals.

Personally, my kids are getting older. I only have two and a half years left with my oldest at home and four with the youngest. This is wildly depressing and helps keep my main focus on the family. I’ve read too many author interviews where folks have missed vacations and sacrificed their family for their career. I’m not going to be one of those people. My main job in life is mother and wife. The author part is icing on the cake.

The world is a scary place. Terrorism is on the rise, my country is divided, the economy is in the tank, and our leaders aren’t leading. I hope to deal with this reality by leaning on my faith. So much in the world I cannot change, but I can pray and stay informed.

These are my not so lofty goals of 2014. What are yours?
